Mandated by Pacific Island Leaders, the establishment of a Pacific Regional Human Rights Mechanism is being deliberated in Suva Fiji, hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC), and the Commonwealth Secretariat with funding support from AusAid.

The high-level three day consultation aims at providing information on both national and regional human rights mechanisms, an analysis and discussion on the merits of establishing a regional human rights mechanism for the Pacific and the production of an outcomes document which should highlight the pathway for the establishment of a regional human rights mechanism for the Pacific region.

The consultation has brought together both Government and Non Government representatives.  Representing Tonga Government is Mr. Alfred Soakai from the Prime Ministers Office, whilst the Non Government representative is ‘Ofakilevuka Guttenbeil-Likilliki, Director of the Women and Children Crisis Centre.

The consultation is part of the regional activities during the 16 Days of Activism being celebrated and advocated throughout the Pacific region.
